Assessment Structure:

• Paper 1/2: Multiple Choice (Core/Extended)
• Paper 3/4: Theory (Core/Extended)
• Paper 5: Practical Test (hands-on)
• Paper 6: Alternative to Practical (written)

Key Features: Core caps at grade C. Extended covers additional topics and includes longer answer questions requiring data interpretation and application. The syllabus covers 21 topics, including cells, enzymes, nutrition, transport, genetics, ecology and biotechnology.

2026-2028 Syllabus: No new topics added. Core candidates sit Papers 1 & 3; Extended candidates sit Papers 2 & 4. All candidates choose Paper 5 or Paper 6.

• Paper 1B: Core Biology (nature/variety, structure/function, reproduction/inheritance, ecology, biological resources)
• Paper 2B: Further Biology (advanced topics, data analysis, practical skills)
• Modular format (4XBI1) available

Key Features: Emphasis on real-world applications and practical skills. Paper 2B includes questions on data analysis and experimental design. Topics include cells and organisation, biological molecules, enzymes, nutrition, transport systems, coordination and response, genetics, inheritance, ecology and biotechnology.

2026 Syllabus: Five main topics: nature and variety of living organisms, structures and functions in living organisms, reproduction and inheritance, ecology and the environment, and use of biological resources.
